Westgate Hill
Here can be seen the springing of the arch which formed the Old West Gate to the town. The town wall originally stretched from this point across to the corner tower of the castle. The row of medieval cottages alongside the arch are, with the exception of Monkton Old Hall, the oldest domestic buildings in the town dating back to the 14th Century. One of them still retains its vaulted undercroft and it has been suggested that this was the town’s lock-up or gaol.
